IMT historical reference

After World War II, U.S. Army decision-makers outlined requirements for a new medium tank to replace the Sherman. The Improved Medium Tank (IMT) had fairly thick sloped armor, while its low profile provided additional defense. The vehicle's weight was not supposed to exceed 45 tons, and a power-to-weight ratio of 20 h.p./t was planned. A 105 mm gun and six machineguns were considered for the tank's armament. The gun was supposed to be stabilized in the horizontal and vertical planes. In addition, the tank was to be equipped with an optical rangefinder and radar. The project was deemed to have no prospects before a prototype was built. However, many of the technical solutions were used in later American tanks.
