Armor thickness

The nominal thickness of a plate in millimetres, before any angle is taken into account.

Also known as armour, armor, nominal armor, plate thickness.

Every specification sheet quotes three figures, front, side and rear, for the hull and for the turret. They are the raw thickness of the plate, measured straight through.

On its own the number says very little. A 100 millimetre plate laid at 60 degrees stops more than a 200 millimetre plate standing vertical, so the interesting figure is always the effective thickness at the angle a shell actually meets it.
