XM69 Hacker historical reference
An M60 tank modernization project based on experience gained from combat, aimed at rectifying the identified problems. The designers proposed a better-protected turret, as well as a hull made from rolled armor parts, which, in turn, required installing new suspension. An enhanced 110 mm gun took care of firepower, and the tank had an innovative stabilization system with optical sensors to account for the barrel position. Moreover, the modernization was 40% more expensive than the price of the mass produced M60A1 and was no more affordable than producing a new vehicle. Despite all the benefits, the project did not solve several layout problems and it was terminated.
