Su bautismo de fuego lo tuvo en Gela, Sicilia, dentro de la operacion Husky, el 10 de julio de 1943. Después se traslada a Francia, desembarcando en la peninsula de Cotentin el 9 de junio de 1944, y formando el flanco derecho de la operación Cobra. A partir de aquí, atraviesa Francia, llegando al canal Albert, en Bélgica el 8 de septiembre de 1944. El dia 18 cruza la frontera alemana, tomando posiciones defensivas cerca de Geilenkirchen. El 3 de octubre lanza una ofensiva sobre la linea Siegfried, cruzando el rio Wurm, y tomando Puffendorf el 16 de noviembre, y Barmen el 28 de ese mes.Entonces es requerida para contrarrestar la ofensiva de las Ardenas. Ataca desde el este de Bélgica y detiene al 5ú Ej. Panzer. En enero ayuda a reducir la presion en las Ardenas, limpiando la zona de Houffalize y del rio Ourthe. El 27 de marzo cruza el Rin, y es la primera division americana en llegar al rio Elba.
