Die 5. Panzer Division wurde am 20.11.1940 unter dem Oberbefehl von Felix Steiner aufgestellt. Während der Aufstellung entschied man, ihr den Namen "Wiking" zu geben. Im Russlandfeldzug 1941 wurde die Division als Speerspitze der Heeresgruppe Süd zum Durchbruch Richtung Rostow eingesetzt. 1942 war der Einsatzschwerpunkt die Operation "Blau" - der Vormarsch in den Kaukasus.
