The English word "legion" originated from a Latin word which meant to collect. The Roman empire used it as a military designation for a large formation of troops, ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 infantry, plus cavalry. In early times when the land of Israel was under Roman military occupation, it was a familiar term used by the military and civilians alike. Even angels used it, referring to themselves as "legion." In the ancient times the chosen vehicle of warfare was the chariot. You could say the chariot of ancient times is the equivalent of the tanks used today. It was a fast and fearsome weapon that allowed the ancients to move quickly in battle to attack their foe.
