AS-XX 40 t historical reference
A prototype of a French medium tank developed in 1978 as part of a program to research new configuration options. The main idea of the vehicle was to ensure maximum crew safety. For this purpose, the gun and ammunition were located outside of the fighting compartment, which lowered the risk of injury. In case of fire, the crew could release the burning crate using a pyrocartridge. Most ammo was located in a mechanized rack on the gun and was automatically replenished from two armored crates in the rear. Since the development was so complex and labor-intensive, it stopped at the wooden mockup stage.
