Schwere Panzer Abteilung 501
Godłem jednostki był słynny: Przyczajony do ataku Tygrys. Najczęściej malowany na przednim pancerzu, w okolicy przedziału kierowcy lub w centrum przedniego pancerza.
Był jednym z dwóch Batalionów Tygrysów, które obiecane były gen. E. Rommlowi przez Adolfa Hitlera w celu wzmocnienia niem. Afrika Korps. Tygrysy z obu batalionów zostały specjalnie przygotowane i wyposażone do ekstremalnych warunków walki w terenie pustynnym. Batalion powstał 10.V.1942 roku. w Erfurcie. Bezpiecznie przebył drogę morską z Italii na front Afrykański, od razu został rzucony do walki co zaowocowało zniszczeniem ponad 200 alianckich pojazdów opancerzonych oraz dział. Jednak Afrika Korps musiało ulec liczebnej przewadze Aliantów. Kolejno, Tygrysy były stosowane defensywnie do osłaniania, wycofujących się oddziałów Afrika Korps. Do 1 marca, wszystkie Tygrysy zostały utracone w walce bądź były zbyt uszkodzone, i tym samym niezdatne do walki. Batalion praktycznie przestał istnieć.
