V rokoch 1941 a 1942 v Tobruku a jeho okolí sa odohralo niekoľko bitiek medzi britskou armádou a medzi nemeckými a talianskymi jednotkami (Afrikakorps). 11.apríla 1941 bol Tobruk obkľúčený nemecko-talianskymi vojskami. Obkľúčené územia hájili britské a austrálské jednotky (boli nemeckými médiami nazvané ako "Púštne krysy"), ktoré boli v októbri 1941 vystriedané čerstvými silami. Medzi ne patrila aj poľská Samostatná brigáda karpatských strelcov, ktorej bol podriadený aj 11. československý peší prápor.
Pre ČS jednotky to bola najväčšia vojnová akcia v Severnej Afrike. ČS peší prápor pod velením podplukovníka Karla Klapálka o sile 643 mužov tu od 21. októbra do 10. decembra 1941 hájil najviac ohrozený západný úsek pevnostného perimetra. V bojoch o Tobruk padlo 14 príslušníkov práporu a 81 bolo zranených.
