7 PSKW był trzecim pułkiem wchodzącym w skład Wielkopolskiej Brygady Kawalerii, który organizował się w Grudziądzu jako 5 Pułk Strzelców Konnych . Od 30 maja 1921 r. nastąpiła zmiana nazwy na 7 Pułk Strzelców Konnych Wielkopolskich , która przetrwała do września 1939 r. Od pierwszych dni sierpnia 1939 roku pułk przebywał w rejonie Murowanej Gośliny. Podczas trwania kampanii wrześniowej 1939r. brał udział w walkach pod Zbrożkową Wolą, zdobywał m. Brochów, toczył bój pod Leśniczówką Dembowskie i następnie pod Zamościem . W dniu kapitulacji stolicy 29 września pułk złożył broń w Łazienkach .W uznaniu zasług bojowych pułku jego sztandar został odznaczony Krzyżem Srebrnym Orderu Wojennego Virtuti Militari 5 klasy.
