24.Panzer-Division was formed from the 1. Kavallerie-Division on the 1st December 1941. Pz.Abt.(f)101 and Reiter-Regiments 2 and 21 formed the nucleus of the new division. The 24.Panzer-Division was unique in that it was the only panzer division formed from cavalry. In keeping with their mounted origins, the AFV uniforms 24th Panzer's tank crewmen were edged in the golden-yellow of the cavalry rather than Panzer pink.
The division was surrounded in Stalingrad and effectively destroyed being reformed in France in 1943
