Schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung 653 was formed from Sturmgeschütz Abteilung 129 and trained on the brand New Ferdinand just in time to be deployed to the Kursk battle in July of 1943. They claimed 360 kills for the loss of 13 Ferdinands during the battle of Kursk. They fought into the fall of 1943 on the eastern front then were sent to Austria to have the Ferdinand refitted and renamed to Elephant. After this rebuild time some of them were sent to Italy where they were used to hold off the allies. After Italy they were pulled out and were one of only two battalions to be equipped with the new Jagdtiger which they finished the war fighting the Americans in the west.
