# Spotting

Making an enemy vehicle visible to your whole team, which is what turns a position into a target.

Also known as spot, lighting up, detection.

Nothing can be shot at until it is spotted. The game runs vision checks between the spotting vehicle's viewpoints and points on the target: if a line of sight exists and the distance is inside the target's detection range, the target is revealed to the entire team.

A spot lasts while the check keeps succeeding, plus a few seconds of grace after it stops, which is the window in which a vehicle that has broken line of sight is still shootable.

Damage dealt to a target you spotted is credited to you as assistance, which is how the contribution of a [scout](/glossary/light-tank.md) is measured at all.
