# Percentile

The share of players a result beats, which turns a raw number into a position in the population.

Also known as percentile rank, top percent.

A percentile answers the only question a raw statistic leaves open: compared to whom? 2,400 [combined damage](/glossary/combined-damage.md) on a given vehicle means nothing until it is placed against everyone else's, where it might be the 65th or the 99th percentile depending on the tank.

`percentile = share of the tracked population this result is better than`

Marks of Excellence are percentiles the game itself computes and prints on the barrel.

This is also what the rating colours encode: they are bands of the population, which is why the same colour means the same thing across two ratings that use different scales.
