# Module damage

The separate damage value a shell applies to modules and crew members, which is what decides whether a hit tracks, breaks or wounds.

Also known as damage to modules, crit damage.

[Modules](/glossary/module.md) and crew have their own [hit points](/glossary/hit-points.md), and a [shell](/glossary/shell.md) carries its own damage figure against them, usually different from the damage it deals to the vehicle itself. A hit that penetrates near the engine deals its vehicle damage and separately chips the engine's health.

This is why a shell that fails to penetrate can still [track](/glossary/tracks.md) a target: the impact applies module damage to the tracks even when the hull takes nothing.
