# Flanking

Attacking a position from its side or rear, where armor is thin and guns are pointed elsewhere.

Also known as flank, flank push.

Vehicles are built to face forward. Coming at them from the side defeats the [armor](/glossary/armor-thickness.md), the [gun arc](/glossary/gun-arc.md) and often the crew's attention at once, and a flank that collapses usually takes the rest of the team with it.

The cost is time and exposure: the route [round](/glossary/shell.md) is longer than the route through, and a flank attempted alone is a vehicle removed from where the battle is actually being decided.
