# Active scouting

Driving fast through or past enemy positions to reveal them, accepting exposure in exchange for information.

Also known as active spotting, suicide scouting.

An active [scout](/glossary/light-tank.md) uses speed and [proximity spotting](/glossary/proxy-spotting.md) to light a position that nothing can see from safety. Done at the right moment it hands the team every target on a [flank](/glossary/flanking.md) at once.

Done at the wrong moment, which is most of the time in the first minute, it costs the team a vehicle for a few seconds of vision. The difference is timing: after the enemy has committed, an active pass is information, before it, it is a donation.
