La dinastia dei Borbone era una delle più importanti e antiche case regnanti in Europa. Di origine francese, la famiglia è un ramo cadetto dell'antichissima dinastia dei Capetingi, che in seguito all'estinzione degli altri rami ereditò il trono di Francia nel 1589. Il Regno comprendeva le attuali regioni Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Molise, Puglia e Sicilia, oltre a gran parte dell'odierno Lazio meridionale (distretti di Sora e Gaeta) e al Cicolano (distretto di Cittaducale), l'area orientale dell'attuale provincia di Rieti. Il regno ebbe fine con la spedizione dei Mille, la firma dell'armistizio e la resa di Francesco II il 17 febbraio 1861, e la proclamazione del Regno d'Italia il 17 marzo dello stesso anno.
