Що означає слово «хохол»
Насправді це українське слово й означає воно «чуб, чуприна, пелех». Споріднені слова є в інших слов’янських мовах: чеське і словацьке – chochol, польське chochoł. Ну і, звісно, російське хохолок, хохол та білоруське хахол.
Наші пращури-воїни з часів Київської Русі, та й значно раніше – ще з арійської доби на голеній голові залишали довге пасмо волосся чуприну або чуб. Такий звичай мали й запорожці, які називали ті пасма оселедцями. Оселедці були своєрідними відзнаками лицарства, відваги та людяності, і тому мати їх дозволялося далеко не всім на Запорізькій Січі. Недосвідчені вояки, брехуни, боягузи, злодії не мали такої честі.
