A l’origine du RMT, on trouve le RTST, c'est-à-dire le Régiment des tirailleurs
sénégalais du Tchad. Celui-ci naît en 1900 et doit son nom à la conquête totale du
pays. Pendant la Première Guerre Mondiale il lutte contre les Allemands installés
au Cameroun et les en chasse.
Pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, le RTST rejoint la France Libre et
s’empare de l’oasis de Koufra, sous les ordres du colonel Leclerc, le 1er mars 1941.
En 1943, il intègre la 2ème Division Blindée créée par Leclerc et devient alors le
Régiment de Marche du Tchad. Il participe à la libération progressive de la
France et tient alors son célèbre serment en s’emparant de Strasbourg le 23
novembre 1944. D’ailleurs la devise du régiment est : « le Régiment du Serment »
De 1945 à 1996, le RMT, basé à Montlhéry, en région parisienne.
De 1997 a aujourd hui le RMT est est installé à Noyon, en Picardie.
En 2005, le RMT participe à l'opération "PAMIR XII" en Afghanistan
En 2006, il est engagé au Liban
