Nach dem Ersten Schlesischen Krieg 1740–1742 wurde der Großteil Nieder- und Oberschlesiens an Preußen abgetreten und später zur preußischen Provinz Schlesien reorganisiert. Von 1348 bis zu dessen Ende, im Rahmen der Napoleonischen Kriege, am 6. August 1806 blieb Oberschlesien staatsrechtlich teil des Heiligen Römischen Reiches Deutscher Nation. Von 1815 bis 1866 war Oberschlesien als Teil Preussens bzw. Österreichs ein Territorium innerhalb des Deutschen Bundes. Nach 1871 wurde die preußische Provinz Teil des zweiten Deutschen Kaiserreiches. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg kam es zu einer Volksabstimmung in einem Teil Oberschlesiens (Abstimmungsgebiet), bei der 59,6 Prozent der Oberschlesier im Abstimmungsgebiet für Deutschland votierten. Trotz diesen Votums wurde Oberschlesien danach dreigeteilt, ein Teil kam ohne Volksabstimmung zur Tschechoslowakei und der größte Teil des Industriegebietes kam zu Polen.
1945 kam dann auch der bei Deutschland verbliebene Teil Oberschlesien zu Polen.
