Kurhessen ist die inoffizielle Bezeichnung für das Kurfürstentum Hessen (1803 - 1806 und 1813 - 1866).
1803 wurde die Landgrafschaft Hessen - Kassel zum Kurfürstentum des Heiligen Römischen Reiches erhoben.
In der napoleonischen Herrschaft von 1807 - 1813 war das Kurfürstentum Hessen zwischenzeitlich im Königreich Westfalen aufgegangen.
Das Kurfürstentum Hessen bestand bis 1866, als es von Preußen annektiert wurde und der preußischen Provinz Hessen - Nassau
(1867 - 1944) eingegliedert wurde.
Von 1944 bis 1945 bestand durch Aufteilung der Provinz Hessen - Nassau vorübergehend die preußische Provinz Kurhessen. Am 19. September 1945 wurde Kurhessen durch Erlass der US - amerikanischen Militärregierung zusammen mit Nassau (ohne den westlichen Teil um Montabaur) Oberhessen und Starkenburg zum neuen Land Groß - Hessen (heutiges Bundesland Hessen) zusammengefasst. Aus der preußischen Provinz Kurhessen wurde nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg der Regierungsbezirk Kassel.
