Schon früh in der Kriegsgeschichte wurde versucht, gepanzerte Fahrzeuge zu Kriegszwecken einzusetzen. In der antiken Kriegführung wurde der Streitwagen sowohl für den Fernkampf durch Bogenschützen wie auch für den Nahkampf zum Überrennen feindlicher Linien benutzt. Bei Belagerung von Festungen wurde der gedeckte, fahrbare Rammbock benutzt. So konnte der Angreifer den Rammbock, vor Pfeilen der Verteidiger geschützt, an die Festungsmauer bringen.
