Pułk swoje korzenie wywodzi ze sformowanego na przełomie 1941-1942 w Karabałty (Kirgizja) Ośrodka Organizacyjnego Broni Pancernej. 26 marca 1942 ewakuowano Ośrodek Organizacyjny z ZSRR do Persji. Od 2 do 26 kwietnia ośrodek wraz z Centrum Wyszkolenia Broni Pancernej zakwaterował się na terenie Iranu w Pahlevi, Teheranie i Ahwazie. 27 kwietnia 1942 oddziały pancerne zostały zaokrętowane w porcie Abadan i poprzez Ocean Indyjski przybyły do Adenu, a dalej przez Morze Czerwone do Suezu. Dalszy transport zmierzał do Palestyny przez El Quantara - Gaza do Rehovot, skąd 14 maja samochodami przewieziono żołnierzy do Gedera-Hill i Beit-Girgia. 1 czerwca 1942 ze składu ośrodka wydzielono 1 Batalion Czołgów. Na dowódcę wyznaczony został przybyły z Londynu mjr Stanisław Gliński.
Od 14 czerwca batalion przesunięty został do Egiptu i wraz z innymi jednostkami stanowił odwód Armii Nil. W tym czasie w obozie Cowley otrzymał pierwsze czołgi. Były to czołgi szkoleniowe Mk. VIB.
