Tradycje i historia brygady sięgają czasów II Wojny Światowej, dokładnie 1 sierpnia 1944 na terytorium ZSRR sformowano 4 Brygadę Pancerną, która jest protoplastą brygady. Po okresie wojennym 4 Brygada Pancerna została włączona w skład Krakowskiego Okręgu Wojskowego i w roku 1946 została przeformowana w 8 Drezdeński Pułk Czołgów Średnich, pułk ten brał udział w 1947 w akcji „Wisła”Dużym wyróżnieniem dla pułku było to że w roku 1979 jako pierwsza jednostka w Wojsku Polskim otrzymał nowoczesne jak na tamte czasy czołgi T-72.Obecnie brygada jest bardzo nowoczesnym związkiem taktycznym Wojska Polskiego, żołnierze brygady uczestniczą w misjach zagranicznych. W roku 2004 dowództwo międzynarodowej dywizji w ramach IV zmiany PKW Irak stanowili żołnierze 34 BKPanc.
