Le régiment d' Esterhazy Houzards, est créé en 25 janvier 1735 pour le comte Valentin-Joseph Esterhazy. Il devient David Houzards en 1743, puis Turpin Houzards en 1747. En février 1761  son nouveau mestre de camp, le marquis André-Claude de Chamborant de la Clavière lui donne son nom. Sous la Révolution Française le régiment est renommé le 2ème Hussards. Lors de la Restauration de la Royauté, le régiment sera nommé tour-à-tour, Régiment des Hussards de la Reine puis Hussards de la Meurthe. Il redeviendra 2e Régiment de Hussards en 1825. Il est envoyé en Algérie en 1844, pour contrer le Maroc, allié à Abd El Kader. Le régiment gagne en Algérie le surnom de « Lions du Désert ». Sur son étendard figure les batailles : Valmy 1792 ; Austerlitz 1805 ; Friedland 1807 ; Isly 1844 ; Solférino 1859 ; Flandres 1914 ; L'Avre 1918. Ce régiment à servi en Ex-Yougoslavie (Bosnie et Kosovo), en Côte d'Ivoire, au Tchad, en République Centre Africaine, au Liban et en Afghanistan.
