Divizija 1943 m. vasario 21 d. ji pirmą kartą kovėsi Aleksejevkoje (Oriolo sritis, 50 km į pietvakarius nuo Oriolo). Vėliau ji 42-ojo šaulių korpuso (48-oji armija) sudėtyje kovėsi Kursko mūšyje, kur atlaikė vokiečių 383-osios pėstininkų ir 18-osios tankų divizijų atakas, 120 lėktuvų antskrydžius.
Po Kursko mūšio divizija perkelta į 1-ąjį Pabaltijo frontą. Vadavo Baltarusiją ir Lietuvą. 1944 m. rugpjūčio 2 d. pasiekė Šiaulių priemiesčius. Mėnesį stovėjo ties Šiauliais, buvo papildyta Lietuvoje mobilizuotais lietuviais. Rugpjūčio viduryje Šiaulius atakavo vokiečių tankų daliniai, tačiau 16-oji divizija apsigynė. Tai vienos stambiausių tankų atakų karo pabaigoje Pabaltijyje.
