Zırhlı araçlar Türk Ordusuna ilk kez 1928 yılında Fransız`lardan satın alınan ve Maltepe `deki Piyade Atış Okulu`na verilen Renault FT-17 tankı ile girmiştir. 1932 yılında Sovyet Rusya`dan bir miktar T-26 ve T-27 tankları satın alınmıştır. 1924 yılında ilk muharip tank birliği Lüleburgaz`da Tank Taburu olarak kurulmuştur. Binbaşı Tahsin Yazıcı`nın komutanlığı bu Tank Taburu için Rusya`dan 64 T-26 tankı ile 34 adet BA-6 ve BA-3 satın alınmıştır. 1937 yılında ilk Zırhlı Tugay, Lüleburgaz`da kuruldu.1943`de şasisi Kırıkkale`de yapılan ve bir Ford motoru ile mücehhez Türk yapısı bir tankın tecrübeleri yapıldı. Fakat Türk endüstrinin yetersizliği nedeniyle bu tecrübe başarısızlıkla sonuçlandı.
