Wie im gesamten Nachkriegseuropa war Kaffee auch in Sachsen Mangelware. Die Einstellung der Lieferungen aus Russland 1954 führte zu einer Versorgungskrise. Ab 1957 wurde ersatzweise „Röstfein“ hergestellt. Kaffee wuchs bis in die 1970er Jahre zum wichtigsten Posten im Budget der Haushalte heran.
Das war allein der sächsischen Tradition des Kaffeekränzchens und dem damit verbundenen bürgerlichen Meinungsaustausch und der Kontaktpflege geschuldet. Dies führte zu einem erhöhten Verbrauch an Bohnenkaffee. Frei nach dem bereits im 18. Jahrhundert kolportierten sächsischen Motto „Ohne Gaffee gönn mer nich gämpfn!“ gaben Bürger damals 3,3 Milliarden Mark pro Jahr für Kaffee aus, so viel wie für Möbel und doppelt so viel wie für Schuhe.
"Gaffee" ist selbstverständlich auch in unseren Panzern zu finden. Manchmal mehr als "Mumpeln". Wenn ihr also auf dem Schlachtfeld frisch "uffgebriehten Gaffee" schnuppert, dann ist das Königlich Sächsische Panzerregiment in der Nähe!
