Imperium zostało założone przez Imperatora Ludzkości (Mistrz ludzkości, władcy ludzkości i Boga rodzaju ludzkiego) na końcu "Wieku Konfliktu", okresu anarchii, bezprawia i bezsensownego zniszczenia, które trwało już od wielu wieków. Bardzo zaawansowana galaktyczna cywilizacja, zbudowana przez człowieka w poprzednich erach przepadła.

  
Jednakże, kiedy sztormy spaczni Wieku Konfliktu opadły, Imperator zdecydował, by połączyć ludzkość pod jego rządami, zmieniając jego hordy techno-barbarzyńskich wojowników w pierwsze oddziały nadludzi zwanych Space Marines.

  
Po zabezpieczeniu naukowych placówek i kosmicznych doków Luny, bazował na Marsie, Imperator zbudował wojenną flotę, z którą rozpoczął Wielką Krucjatę, która trwała przez dwa wieki i skończyła się formalnym ustanowieniem Imperialnych Rządów ponad wszystko.

  
Podczas tego okresu, Imperator zatrudnił swoich najpotężniejszych żołnierzy, Space Marines i ich urodzonych liderów, Prymarchów....
