68 Squall V reakci na západoevropský program výsadkových tanků (Spähpanzer) zvažovala Československá socialistická republika několik možností vyzbrojení vlastních lehkých vozidel. Nejslibnější z nich byla varianta dvouhlavňových automatických kanónů ráže 30–57 mm, které by používaly granáty s vyšší průbojností. Zpočátku seznam požadavků na vyvíjený tank zahrnoval i schopnost překonávat vodní toky, ale vzhledem ke zvýšenému pancéřování ustoupila tato vlastnost do pozadí. Důraz byl kladen také na vysokou pohyblivost a malou čelní siluetu, která zajišťovala vozidlu schopnost přežití na bojišti.
