The New Zealand Native Contingent sailed from Wellington in February 1915 to Egypt to train, and then on to Gallipoli where they entered the fighting into World War I. Known as the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion, formally incorporated as a unit in the New Zealand Division one year later.
This unit and group of men were the fore bearers of the famed Maori Battalion of the second World War.
Its motto was "Te Hokowhitu a Tu", the seventy twice-told warriors of the war god Tumatauenga, so named because 140 was the favored size of the traditional war party or taua. This name was given by Wi Pere, an east coast rangatira.
This is a NZ based Clan and we are dedicated to the memory of the men who fought and died in World War I and World War II.
